The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April through October. During these months, the steep trails are safer and less slippery. If you visit in the rainy season, authorities may close the canyon trails due to flash flood risks.

Planning questions
How to get from Malang to Tumpak Sewu?
The easiest way is to hire a private car with a driver or join an organized tour. The drive from Malang takes 2 to 2.5 hours. We highly recommend a driver over renting a scooter, as the mountain roads are steep, winding, and filled with local traffic.
What should I wear to hike Tumpak Sewu?
Wear quick-drying, lightweight clothing because you will get wet from the waterfall mist and river crossings. Sturdy water shoes or strapped sandals with good grip are mandatory. Bring a full change of dry clothes to leave in the car.
Which is better, the Malang or Lumajang entrance to Tumpak Sewu?
The waterfall is located on the border, but the primary and most accessible entrance with the famous Panorama Point is on the Lumajang side. Drivers coming from Malang will automatically take you to this Lumajang entrance point.
